Multi-Standard AMI Meters, Powered by EnVerv’s PLC Modem SoC

KRANJ, Slovenia & SAN JOSE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–June 17, 2014–

Iskraemeco and EnVerv announced today their partnership for development of next generation multi-standard residential, commercial and industrial smart meters where EnVerv’s EV8000 Power-Line Communications (PLC) modem System-on-Chip (SoC) serves as the multi-protocol, multi-band communications engine supporting legacy G1 S-FSK and the new OFDM-based G3-PLC standards.

“We have chosen EnVerv as our G3-PLC technology partner due to their superior performance over alternative solutions and the flexibility of their multi-protocol, multi-band SoC modem,” said Markus Guebeli, Chief Technology Officer at Iskraemeco. “EnVerv’s ability to service multiple protocols in their modem enables us to offer our existing G1 customers with AMI meters that can be installed in G1 configuration and in future remotely reconfigured to the latest version of the G3-PLC standard, thus future-proofing meter installations and eliminating the need for future truck rolls and consumer disruptions which significantly reduce our customers’ capital and operational expenses.”

“We are very pleased to have been selected by Iskraemeco as their PLC vendor of choice and look forward to expanding our collaboration and delivering innovative solutions for their expanding AMI markets,” said Reza Mirkhani, Sr. Vice President at EnVerv. “Iskraemeco has been an invaluable partner in successful development of multimode G1/G3 AMI meters using the EV8000.”

The EV8000 is a fully integrated single-chip PLC SoC that includes comprehensive modem functionality from the power line to the network layer and has programmable frequency bands, covering CENELEC-A, FCC and ARIB bands without the need for chip or module hardware changes. Furthermore, the EV8000 soft-modem can be programmed to operate in ITU-T G.9903 (G3-PLC), ITU-T G.9904 (PRIME) and IEEE P1901.2 modes simply by downloading their respective firmware code to the chip remotely over the power-line network.
