MILPITAS, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–June 24, 2014–

As the country gets ready to celebrate more than 235 years of Independence this Fourth of July, PetersenDean Roofing & Solar is celebrating its new partnership with D.R. Horton and its recently opened luxury community of Orchid in Milpitas, CA. The new homes offer solar roofing as a standard feature and as part of its commitment to using made in America, all of the solar panels are made in the United States by Solar World.

While many new home communities offer solar as an option, Orchid is one of the few that offer solar panels as a standard feature. The community, which includes a variety of other eco-friendly attributes, includes 80 single-family homes that provide 1.5 kW grid-tied solar electric system on every home backed by a 25-year warranty. Buyers will have the option to upgrade to 3.0kW, depending on plans, elevations, orientations and available roof space.

Home buyers will not only save on energy costs, but most are also eligible for a 30 percent federal tax deduction based on the cost of the solar installation.

Orchid features three two-story luxury home designs ranging in size from approximately 2,468 to 2,717 square feet with four and five bedrooms, three to four-and-a-half bathrooms and two-car garages. With a Spanish Colonial, Cottage and Italianate exterior styling, the homes include many of today’s most sought after features and new home technologies. A variety of options for personalization are available providing the opportunity to make each home unique to the homeowner’s needs.

“As the price of solar technology continues to drop, more builders and developers are offering solar as standard and experts expect the trend to continue,” added Jim Petersen, founder of PetersenDean, the largest, full-service, privately held roofing and solar company in the United States. PetersenDean is installing both the roof and the solar systems for the D.R. Horton project.

“As solar panel costs continue to fall, more and more builders like D.R. Horton are offering solar as a standard feature. Consumers are asking for it and building codes are requiring energy efficiency and renewable energy products for new construction,” said Petersen. “Solar power is a logical technology and is becoming so affordable that paybacks can be as low as three years. After that the homeowner owns the power. As they say, ‘it’s the new granite countertop’ and people love their granite countertops. But a granite counter can’t pay your electricity bills; solar panels can.”

The announcement is just in time for the Fourth of July since it’s part of PetersenDean’s initiative that supports American jobs, manufacturing and energy independence by sourcing solar panels and all system components from domestic producers. Along with American-made panels, each PetersenDean solar system includes Buy-American-Act-compliant inverters and racking installed by the construction company’s American workforce.

“We made a decision at PetersenDean to only source our products from North America,” said Petersen. “As a result, we are supporting the American economy, supporting the American worker and reinvesting those dollars back in America. It’s that simple. I want to make sure that our products stand the test of time and that our customers are happy. That’s why we choose to go American. It is time to take matters into our own hands. It is about lowering our electric bills. It is about creating our own energy policy. It is about American jobs, American panels, reinvesting in America.”
