Anonymous messaging app for companies opens to the public today

NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–January 16, 2015–

New York-based Collectively launched their controversial Memo app (http://getthememo.com) to the public today. Already used by thousands of employees from top companies like HP, IBM, Amazon, Citigroup, and even members of the United States Armed Forces, Memo enables any employee to create a private Memo board, where fellow employees can discuss their organization anonymously.

“We verify our users’ employers without sending an email to the company, all communications happen through independent mobile networks, and we store no personally identifying information–not even IP addresses,” says CEO Ryan Janssen, “so people are discussing their companies in ways they never felt comfortable with before.”

Until now, Memo users had to belong to specific companies. With this release, however, employees from any company can create a private company board and there is even a public Memo board where everyone can participate.

“We’ve been shocked at the quality of conversations already happening on the Public board,” says Janssen. “We knew this worked inside companies, but it’s really amazing to see strangers from different companies supporting each other publicly.”

When asked about the potential for abuse, Janssen responded, “The thing we’ve learned is that people want to like their company. They get frustrated with work when they feel powerless. Memo gives them a voice, and so far, they’ve used that voice as a force for good.”

Memo plans to earn money by providing companies with sentiment analytics and other tools to help them understand and respond to their employees. “Employees understand their company’s customers, technologies, and opportunities,” says Janssen. “Any company that ignores their voice does so at its own peril.”
