–Strategic investment links two firms dedicated to foiling cyberattacks –

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–April 9, 2015–

Rubicon Labs, Inc., a cybersecurity firm developing secure communication technologies for cloud-based data centers and the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) market, announced today that Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM) has joined its previously announced Series “A” financing round as a strategic investor.

Akamai, the global leader in Content Delivery Network (CDN) services, joins earlier investors, Third Point Ventures and Pelion Ventures. The Series “A” financing round, which now is closed, exceeds $11M.

“Akamai invested in Rubicon because it has the unique capability to make encryption keys invisible so that authorized users and potential hackers alike have no knowledge of what they are,” said Stephen Ludin, Chief Architect of Akamai. “Rubicon has developed a true zero knowledge system whose protocols are cryptographically sound for use in data centers but also light enough to scale down to emerging IoT applications.”

Mr. Ludin added, “The explosive growth of connected IoT devices has created the greatest vulnerability in the attack surface we’ve seen in recent years, and our experience tells us that legacy secure communications protocols are largely ineffective.”

“We are delighted that Akamai joined our Series A financing,” said Rubicon CEO Dave Lundgren. “This investment is a vote of confidence in our approach to cybersecurity and represents an opportunity for Rubicon to work closely with the industry’s leader in cloud security to explore and develop next-generation secure communications technology.”

Rubicon’s vision is that cloud-based data centers require solutions that combine both hardware and software to protect financial firms, government institutions and individuals from sophisticated hacker attacks. The company’s cloud-based security offering, which is backwards compatible and capable of being updated remotely, offers performance, cost and power benefits that are orders of magnitude more attractive than existing solutions.
